Phil Barker

Phil Barker has been in the automotive industry for 19 years, predominantly in the field of vehicle and chassis engineering, but more recently, as Chief Engineer of Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technologies, in response to the increasing amount of consultancy work undertaken by Lotus Engineering in this field.

His expertise lies in the vehicle integration and feasibility of electric and hybrid technologies into existing and all-new platforms. He also has experience in the creation of vehicle concepts using present and future technologies.

Dr. Harry Cho - Team Leader for Hybrid Vehicle Technologies - AVL Powertrain UK

Dr Harry Cho

Dr. Harry Cho has worked for Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea for 15 years, on hydraulics, controls, and calibration of automatic transmissions and CVTs. After PhD research in Cranfield University, he joined AVL Powertrain UK in 2006. Dr. Cho is currently leading the Hybrid Systems Team in several engineering projects from major automotive OEMs in the UK.

Nick Ford, Senior Automotive Consultant - Frost & Sullivan

Nick Ford

Nick has worked closely with business planning functions, providing strategy guidance and market development support throughout his career.

In his previous role he was Product Planning Director at TRW with global responsibility for their £3 billion automotive steering business providing strategy guidance for their electric steering products. Prior to this Nick was responsible for leading Lucas/TRW’s developments in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems technologies including ACC and Lane Departure Warning and was instrumental in setting up a JV company with Thales for 77 GHz radar sensor development and production.

Nick has 13 years of automotive experience preceded by 23 years in Aerospace and Defence at British Aerospace and Lucas. As well as holding senior management positions in these corporations, Nick has been MD of EMM Computers, a technology start up company which exceeded $ 1 million turnover in its first year of operation.

Since joining Frost & Sullivan in 2004 Nick has been working closely with senior executives in the automotive domain developing their business and product strategy.

Dr. Michael Lampérth, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer - EVO Electric Ltd

Dr. Michael Lamperth

Dr. Lampérth is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of EVO Electric Ltd (www.evo-electric.com) and Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He studied at Winterthur Polytechnic and Imperial College (Phd Mechanical Engineering, 1999). Previous work engagements include industrial research and development at Kissling Ltd and an apprenticeship at MSW-Winterthur, both in Switzerland.

Dr. Lampérth has numerous scientific publications in the field of mechatronics, including important work on electric machines, hybrid-electric vehicle drivetrains, and medical robotics. He co-founded EVO Electric in 2006 to commercialise advanced electric machine technology he helped develop at Imperial College.

Frank is a graduate of the Higher School of Mechanical Engineering, Kassel and is a British Chartered Engineer.

Gianfranco has been working on passenger car Diesel engines for nearly 15 years covering many aspects of calibration, air and combustion systems optimisation. Last year Gianfranco moved to Prodrive AT to lead the powertrain department in a number of different advanced engineering programs related to both automotive and non automotive applications.

Professor Nick Vaughan, Head of Department of Automotive Engineering - Cranfield University

Professor Nick Vaughan

Nick Vaughan graduated from the University of London with a BSc(Eng) in Mechanical Engineering and then gained a PhD from the University of Bristol following a short period of work in the aircraft industry. He joined Cranfield in August 2002 following over 20 years in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath.

He has successfully supervised 20 doctoral students and many Masters students. He has published over 100 technical papers and is winner of the IMechE Clifford S Steadman Prize in 1999 and the Crompton-Lanchester Medal in 2005. He has been on the EPSRC College of Peers and an Assessor for the DTI Technology Programme. He is also a member of the Advisory Panel for the Powertrain Theme of the Foresight Vehicle Programme.

Nick Vaughan is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and has been an active member through most of his career having organised many conferences and seminars. He was Chairman of the Automobile Division Board in 2005-6, and a member of the Academic Studies Committee 2001-5. He is still a member of the Automobile Division Board and also the Editorial Board for Part D the Journal of Automobile Engineering. In October 2006 he was elected as Vice President- Technical for the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies (FISITA) for a 2 year period.
